Yoga Nidra has risen in popularity in the past few years, and it’s for good reason. This practice is a wonderful approach to healing.

A yoga nidra practitioner lies still in a reclining, comfortable position, while an instructor guides them through a visualization process. By changing brain wave states, it can be both a meditative practice and a deeply relaxing experience.

What many people don’t know is that just like there are different types of yoga classes, there are different types of yoga nidra. The practice can be tailored to fit a individual practitioner with specific conditions or issues.

Here are just a few examples:

Fatigue: Often times those suffering from fatigue need to reset their prana (or energy), so something called Prana Nidra can be helpful. This type of yoga nidra focuses on breath and the currents of energy in the body more than anything else.

Autoimmune Disease: The length and frequency of the yoga nidra is key for the deep healing required for autoimmune issues. It’s important for the practitioner to reach deeper brain wave states and stay in them for a sustained time.

Trauma: Learning safe space meditations are essential in advance of yoga nidra for those dealing with PTSD and other trauma. Following that, practitioners should do shorter nidras for a while and build to longer practices. Eventually the meditative states can rewire the brain around subconscious patterning.

Anxiety and Depression: Both of these conditions can benefit from a nidra that focuses on rotational consciousness (varying visualized images to change mental states), but anxiety might include a safe space meditation, while depression should avoid any language around emotions.

As a yoga therapist, I can use tailored yoga nidra sequences to address my clients’ specific needs. In addition, I may create recordings that my clients can listen to at home, allowing them to take control of their own healing process.
